 What is a Callosity?


     

Callosity

Callosity is the circumscribed thickening of the keratin layer of the epidermis as a result of repeated friction or intermittent pressure. The area has reacted with hyperkeratosis. Common sites include the palmar surface of the hand and the plantar surface of the foot. They are often related to occupational exposure.

A corn is a form of callosity. They are usually not painful and no treatment is required.

Callosity often occur on the top of the toes where there is pressure from the shoes. However, they also sometimes occur at the sole of the foot and in between toes.

Certain callosity may become entwined with the nerves of the skin, these foot corns are extremely painful. Often foot corns develop a core which is often referred to as the "root" by patients.

This condition is more prevalent in females as a result of wearing tight or ill-fitting shoes. Callosity appear as white/ gray or yellow/ brown in colour depending on your skin type. Symptoms include pain and swelling around the foot corns and discomfort with direct pressure.
