Shin splints treatment - exercise to strengthen the lower legs, prevent, repair and care for shin splints problems.
Shin splints treatment involves several weeks of rest from the activity that caused it. You may substitute other forms of conditioning. The doctor may recommend that you take anti-inflammatory medications, or use cold packs and mild compression to feel better. Most often the pain is not so bad with just ordinary walking as part of the shin splints recovery treatment.
After several weeks of shin splints treatment, training can begins at a level much lower than what you were doing before. Increase training slowly. If you start to feel the same pain, quit exercising immediately for the rest of the day and continue with shin splints treatment. Use a cold pack and rest for a day or two. Return to training again at a lower level of intensity. Increase training even more slowly than before.
You can treat your shin splint using RICE therapy:
- rest.
- ice.
- compression
- elevation
Prevention
- Warm up gradually first and then do progressive stretching.
- Slowly increase intensity and duration of exercise.
- Cool down after exercise with light stretching.
- Run on a softer surface, such as grass, dirt, or certain outdoor tracks.
- Do not suddenly change from a softer running surface to a hard one.
- Carefully select footwear. Different shoes have different degrees of support and motion control.
- Avoid over-striding, which can put more stress on your shin.
- Wear orthotics if your doctor recommends them.
