Syndactyly is a medical term for webbed fingers or webbed toes.
Webbed toes and fingers are present at birth (congenital). In early fetal development, webbing (syndactyly) of the toes and fingers is normal. At about 16 weeks of gestation, the toes and fingers usually separate and the webbing disappears. But in some fetuses, this separation doesn't occur. The exact cause isn't known.
Syndactyly (webbed toes) usually don't affect the function of the foot or toes and shouldn't interfere with walking. Although webbing of the fingers usually doesn't affect the function of the hand, it can affect function of the fingers. Your child's doctor may refer you to a surgeon to discuss removing the webbing.
Treatment of Syndactyly (webbed toes) is corrective or reconstructive surgery, which involves general anesthesia. These repairs are usually done when the child is between 6 months and 2 years old.
